Mattress Comparison

There’s a problem in the mattress industry… the MATTRESS!

If you shop for a mattress today, you’ll choose from various combinations of spring, memory foam, latex, and air beds. No matter what type of packaging, branding, cover, or ribbon other companies put on it, it’s all the same.

And it’s been the same for years! There are only so many ways to put lipstick on a pig, so don’t be fooled into another brand’s different version of the same old mattress!

The Purple Mattress

Below we’ll show you an honest comparison of the different types of mattresses, and introduce you to a new technology to consider—Hyper-Elastic Polymer™, built from proven sleep science that is revolutionizing the mattress industry.

The Four Types of Traditional Mattresses

Types of traditional mattresses

Spring Mattresses

  • The most commonly used type of mattress.
  • Uses coil springs distributed throughout the mattress to support your body.
  • Some spring mattresses may not have enough springs to support your body.
  • Some should be rotated every few months so weight distribution stays even.
  • Because of the space inside some spring mattresses, it can be easy for dust mites to live there.
  • Tends to be fairly lightweight and easy to move.
  • Springs have a lot of bounce, which is great for quality time with your partner but can cause disturbances when they stir at night.

Memory Foam Mattresses

  • Various densities of foam determine the quality – the higher the density the longer it will generally last. Different foams conform to your body in different ways.
  • Chemicals binding foam together can give off an unpleasant, toxic odor, known as off-gassing.
  • The soft mattress relieves pressure points, but doesn’t provide support for other areas like your lower back – the more it heats up, the less support it gives.
  • Memory foam mattresses are movement absorbing but can be problematic for quality time with your partner.
  • They are temperature sensitive and can become very hot at night as the material absorbs your body heat.
  • The compact structure of the material is easily broken down by moisture, so memory foam mattresses have a shorter lifespan than other materials.
  • Memory foam mattresses often cost thousands of dollars based on hype alone. Price is based on brand, not material.

Adjustable Air Mattresses

  • High-end air mattresses have separate air chambers, similar to the coil chambers in a spring bed, that are covered by a comfortable topper.
  • The sections can be inflated or deflated to fit the needs of the person on either side.
  • Air mattresses work well for sleeping partners who prefer very different levels of mattress firmness.
  • Air mattresses may deflate after a period of time and can cause back pain if they aren’t reinflated regularly.
  • Low-quality mattresses may also distribute air unevenly, causing one side to billow when pressure is applied to the other side.
  • Assembly may be required and there is a mechanical component as the bed needs a pump to be filled or deflated.
  • Consumers must choose between soft, firm, or average, each of which come with their own problems.

Latex Mattresses

  • Made from either plant- or petroleum-based synthetic rubber so this mattress is a “green” option for environmentally-conscious sleepers.
  • Latex mattresses are soft and bouncy and provide decent support throughout the bed.
  • Because they have a higher air content than most foams, they break down faster.
  • Latex is a fairly common allergy among many people… so you’ll have to make sure anyone sleeping in the bed isn’t allergic.
  • Latex mattresses can be expensive and difficult to find.
The Purple Bed

revolutionary mattress designed for just about everyone. It’s designed to not only help you get better sleep, but to soothe joints, release pressure on the hips and shoulders, and support the neck and back. It’s designed to make bedtime the highlight of your day!

For decades, we’ve studied sleep and designed mattress technology. Purple is the culmination of that research. We’re scientists, and we used proven sleep science to make the most innovative sleeping tech to hit the industry in decades.

How it works

Although aesthetically it might resemble some gel beds, Purple is not gel. Unlike the blue beads that are added to foam to create gel, Purple is a new material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer™. This material sits on top of two high-density foam pads for ultimate comfort.

Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ is a highly-elastic material that can stretch up to 15 times its resting size. Basically, Purple is a pressure-releasing, support-redistributing hyperelastic polymer. (All that really means is that Purple is soft where you want it and firm where you need it.)
