Spring Mattresses

• The compact structure of the material is easily broken down by moisture, so memory foam mattresses have a shorter lifespan than other materials.
• Memory foam mattresses often cost thousands of dollars based on hype alone. Price is based on brand, not material.

Adjustable Air Mattresses

• High-end air mattresses have separate air chambers, similar to the coil chambers in a spring bed, that are covered by a comfortable topper.
• The sections can be inflated or deflated to fit the needs of the person on either side.
• Air mattresses work well for sleeping partners who prefer very different levels of mattress firmness.
• Air mattresses may deflate after a period of time and can cause back pain if they aren’t reinflated regularly.
• Low-quality mattresses may also distribute air unevenly, causing one side to billow when pressure is applied to the other side.
• Assembly may be required and there is a mechanical component as the bed needs a pump to be filled or deflated.
• Consumers must choose between soft, firm, or average, each of which come with their own problems.

• Made from either plant- or petroleum-based synthetic rubber so this mattress is a “green” option for environmentally-conscious sleepers.
• Latex mattresses are soft and bouncy and provide decent support throughout the bed.
• Because they have a higher air content than most foams, they break down faster.
• Latex is a fairly common allergy among many people… so you’ll have to make sure anyone sleeping in the bed isn’t allergic.
• Latex mattresses can be expensive and difficult to find.
