A Mattress That Both Cushions + Supports

Let’s Answer Some of Your Questions
What Is the Grid?
An instantly adapting and rebounding comfort layer made from a super-stretchy material we call GelFlex. (It’s in all of our mattresses and we’re pretty sure you're gonna love it.)
Is the Bed Soft or Firm?
Trick question! It's both. Through the magic of physics, the Grid's columns give way under shoulders and hips but remain supportive for the back and legs.
What Does the Grid Feel Like?
It's one of those things you've gotta experience to believe, but you can think of it as the comfort equivalent of a trust fall: buoyant, cradling, supportive, and soothing.
Will I Get Hot?
Nope. All those little squares easily let air flow and body heat escape. Plus, the GelFlex material itself doesn't retain heat, so if you want to stay cool, you can.
Is It Durable?
Also known as Hyper-Elastic Polymer, our GelFlex material effortlessly stretches and springs back, again and again. It’s just one of the reasons our mattresses are backed by a 10-year warranty!

Simple answer: the Purple GelFlex™ Grid. Specially engineered to softly cradle your hips and shoulders while totally supporting your back’s natural shape, Purple’s patented technology has been used and tested rigorously within medical and consumer applications for over 20 years. In that time, Purple engineers have researched the different mattress materials to know what pairs best with their life-changing technology. Here’s what they found: * Memory foam doesn't consistently give you the support you need throughout the night and generally sleeps hot. * Traditional spring mattresses don’t relieve pressure and cause a great deal of motion transfer, not to mention the squeaking. * The ultra-durable Purple Grid technology cradles your hips and shoulders while giving you the support your body needs and the comfort you crave. Pair it with dynamic, specially-designed fabric-encased coils, and you get complete, immersive comfort all night, every night.
The Purple Mattress: The bed that broke the internet — 2” Purple Grid over traditional high-density foam.
Purple Hybrid: Enhanced dynamic support — 2” Purple Grid™ over Responsive Support Coils.
Purple Hybrid Premier: The ultimate No Pressure mattress — 3” or 4” Purple Grid over Responsive Support Coils.
Thanks to The Purple GelFlex™ Grid, all four mattress options will provide the No Pressure Support and comfort you expect. So which mattress option is right for you? It all comes down to how you want it to feel. Simply put, the thicker the Purple Grid layer, the deeper pressure-cradling you’ll feel, giving you a more weightless feel – all while enjoying superior alignment and back support! TLDR: The more Purple Grid you have, the more it feels like you’re floating.
The Purple Plus Mattress will work great on any flat, sturdy foundation. Whether you put it on a Purple Bed Frame, slats, box foundation, adjustable bed, or even the floor, your Purple Bed will sit pretty in any room.
See the Purple Mattress warranty for more information.
It's important to note that it can take some time for your body to completely adjust to your new Purple Mattress. We highly recommend you sleep on it for a few weeks to give your body a chance to adjust. If you’re still unsatisfied after 21 nights, you can return it for a full refund.
Helpful hint: Our SoftStretch™ Sheets and Mattress Protector let you feel the full comfort of your Purple Mattress.
If you’re looking for the coolest bed in a box there is, don’t sweat it (literally.) Purple mattresses are some of the most breathable mattresses on the market, thanks to the Purple GelFlex™ Grid, which features thousands of natural air channels that promote airflow and neutralize body heat. As a bonus, Purple is also a hypoallergenic mattress that resists all sorts of allergens, like dust mites or pet dander, which can irritate the skin.
Night sweats are the worst, aren’t they? Studies have shown that sleeping temperature has a drastic impact on sleep quality. Breathability directly affects how hot you’ll feel during a night’s sleep, and it’s an important factor to consider before buying a bed in a box. Some bed in a box brands sell mattresses with cooling gel, perforated foam, or other types of cooling technology in order to improve the breathability, but it’s always a good idea to read bed in a box reviews to hear from real customers on the breathability of a mattress before you buy it.
When it comes to choosing a bed in a box, you want a high-quality mattress that provides long term comfort and support. To make an informed decision, it helps to understand the most popular types of mattress materials:
Purple GelFlex™ Grid: The Purple Grid takes mattresses to a whole new level. All Purple mattresses have a top layer Purple Grid, which is made out of patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer material. The open air channels rise a step above all other common mattress materials and is truly revolutionary in the bedding industry. It’s instantly soft where you want it, firm where you need it, and comfortably cool all night. It contours to the body and offers both great bounce and minimal motion transfer. The Purple Grid™ is the reason why Purple mattresses offer universally firm support, are extra breathable, responsive, and a great pick for all sleepers who value getting a great night’s sleep.
Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses are high density, heavy, and slowly contour to your body’s shape. They offer a few benefits, such as being hypoallergenic and having minimal motion transfer. However, some customers have reported that a memory foam bed sleeps hot, has low responsiveness, and can emit an unpleasant off-gassing smell. The smell of some high-density memory foam can linger — even after the mattress is aired out from its shipping package. If mattress coolness is important to you, you might want to steer clear of a memory foam bed.
Gel Memory Foam: In order to improve the heat issues of memory foam mattresses, some mattress brands started infusing the high-density foam with gel. A gel memory foam mattress is very similar to a regular memory foam mattress, except in this one area. Gel memory foam mattresses feel cooler to the touch, though they can warm up during the night as well.
Latex: Latex is an alternative to memory foam that is responsive and has more bounce. Most latex is ventilated and sleeps fairly cool. The biggest issue with latex that many customers face is that it can break down quickly. Latex is an expensive material, so the fact that its durability is not great doesn’t give it the best reputation when it comes to bang for your buck.
Most bed in a box brands sell mattresses of different firmness levels to appeal to a wide market of sleepers. Purple is different in that our mattresses are considered to be “Universal Firmness.” This means that, regardless of sleep position, all sleepers can rest in true comfort that’s soft under your hips and shoulders and with firm support for your back on all our mattresses. This is made possible thanks to our scientific, patented Purple GelFlex™ Grid. The Purple Mattress adapts to you, rather than the other way around. No other mattress company out there provides the comfort and support of the Purple Grid.
When determining the best bed in a box for you, one of the biggest factors to consider is mattress firmness. The firmness of your mattress not only affects how it feels when you lay on it, but it has a direct impact on your long-term sleep quality. Mattress firmness levels are scored on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.
It’s highly unusual for a mattress to actually be a 1 or 10 firmness. Uber-soft mattresses have zero spine support, and ultra-firm mattresses can put undue stress on pressure points. The vast majority of Goldilocks-approved bed in a box mattresses are in the 4-8 firmness range.
Your preferred mattress firmness level depends on your usual sleep position. To sum it up:
Back Sleepers: Because firmer mattresses have better spine support, back sleepers who sleep on their spine usually like a mattress with a 6-7 firmness. Back sleepers prefer the purple hybrid.
Stomach Sleepers: People who sleep on their bellies need spinal alignment support and pressure relief. The weight of each individual stomach sleeper affects their preferred firmness level slightly, but on average, a 5-7 firmness is best. Stomach sleepers prefer the purple hybrid.
Side Sleepers: Those who sleep on their side require a mattress that is softer, malleable, and provides pressure relief. The mattress needs to cushion your hips and shoulders while still being supportive of your neck and spine. Typically, a 4-6 mattress firmness level is recommended for side sleepers. For more information, be sure to read our Side Sleeper’s Guide to Sleeping and learn why Purple is the best bed in a box for all sleeping positions. Side sleepers prefer the Purple Hybrid Premiere 3” or 4”.
Combination Sleepers: The majority of sleepers in the world are combination sleepers – people who change up their sleeping positions during a night’s sleep. Because of this, combination sleepers need a balanced, versatile mattress, making firmness level 6 a great choice. Combinations Sleepers prefer the Purple Hybrid Premiere 3” or 4”.
