Twin size bed frames

Choosing between a twin size bed frame and a twin XL bed frame comes down to length. While both share the same 38-inch width, their structural differences affect mattress compatibility:

• Dimensions: A standard twin size bed frame fits a 75-inch long mattress. A twin XL frame adds an extra 5 inches of length (80 inches total) for more legroom.

• Compatibility: A standard twin mattress will leave a gap on a twin XL base, while a twin XL size mattress will overhang a standard twin size bed frame, causing mattress damage.

• Best Uses: A standard twin bed frame is ideal for toddlers, young children, bunk beds, and small guest rooms. Twin XL frames are best for taller teens, college dorms, or single adults needing extra length.

Twin size bed frames typically range from 37” - 43” wide and 74” - 80” long.

In general, bed frames are 2” to 5" wider and longer than their corresponding mattress sizes. However, some lower profile styles, like platform bed frames, may be closer to the exact dimensions of the mattress.

A twin XL mattress is the same width as a twin size mattress, but it’s 5" longer. Accordingly, a twin XL bed frame is specifically made for the longer mattress size and is typically about 5" longer than a twin bed frame. As such, twin size mattresses are not compatible with twin XL bed frames. 

Note that a twin XL mattress is exactly half the size of a king mattress, so two twin XL mattresses can be combined to make a split king bed. 

Twin XL mattresses are commonly used in college dorms, while twin mattresses are primarily used for children. A twin XL is a good option for taller teens and adults who can use an extra 5" in mattress length.
