How do TEMPUR-Pedic beds compare to Purple mattresses? Consumers who read mattress reviews soon discover that there are several important distinctions between these brands. In this mattress review of Purple and TEMPUR-Pedic, we compare mattresses using the following factors:
- Sizes and Pricing
- Delivery and Packaging
- Trial Period and Return Policy
- Sleeping Position
When Tempurpedic first appeared on the market, memory foam was a new technology. Until that time, if you didn’t want a traditional innerspring mattress, your choice was either an air bed or a waterbed. This new-fangled memory foam contoured comfortably to a sleeper’s body, but it did introduce additional problems — such as heat retention and off-gassing odors.
In 2015, Purple changed the mattress industry forever by introducing a new kind of mattress material — the patented No Pressure® Support of the Purple Grid™ made with Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ material. This scientific innovation provides the contouring capabilities and comfort of memory foam, but with more breathability and versatility to support a variety of body types and sleeping positions.
Purple Mattress Models
Purple’s first mattress was the Purple Bed, commonly known as “the bed that broke the internet.” Purple has since introduced a hybrid mattress known as the Purple Hybrid. There is also a luxury hybrid model called the Purple Hybrid Premier.
TEMPUR-Pedic Mattress Models
The three main types of TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses are the TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt series.
In the TEMPUR-Adapt Series, there are the TEMPUR-Adapt Medium and TEMPUR-Adapt Medium Hybrid. These are most comparable to the Purple® Mattress in terms of comfort, support, and bounce.
The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Series has four models: TEMPUR-ProAdapt Soft, TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium, TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium Hybrid, and TEMPUR-ProAdapt Firm. They are comparable to the Purple® Hybrid.
The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Series has two models, TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Firm. They are comparable to the Purple® Hybrid Premier models (3” and 4”).
Top Factors to Consider in a Mattress Comparison of Purple and TEMPUR-Pedic
Purple has developed a unique Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ which places its mattresses in a separate category all its own. This material was first developed for seat cushions in wheelchairs. Now they use it in mattresses and pillows. The cutting-edge technology is patented and only sold by Purple.
Is a Purple Mattress memory foam?
No, Purple mattresses do not contain memory foam. Some commentators call the Hyper-Elastic Polymer a gel, but it is not. It is a pliable solid made from food-grade and food-contact-safe materials, such as pure mineral oil. The firmness of this polymer has been designed with the perfect level of support and pliability for use in cushioning materials.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ is molded into an open smart grid. This allows a portion of the grid to be pressed down without affecting nearby material. The result is conformity to a user’s shape for pressure relief and support of critical areas, such as the neck and lumbar. The open space in the middle of each cell also lets air circulate for ventilation.
Fagerdala in Sweden (now TEMPUR-Pedic) developed Tempur Foam from the visco-elastic foam that NASA used to cushion astronauts during lift-off (engineers called it “temper foam” because it was temperature-sensitive). It became known as “memory foam” because of its ability to “remember” its shape. Thus, TEMPUR-Pedic is known as the original memory foam mattress.
Memory foam was developed from polyurethane foam. Certain chemicals are added to make it temperature-sensitive. These additives make the foam heavier. As a general rule, when the density of the foam is greater, it is more temperature-sensitive and absorbs more heat.
Both companies use polyurethane foam in their mattresses. Purple uses 2.0 lb/ft³ density polyurethane foam in the base layer of the Purple® Mattress and in the transition layers and base pads of the hybrid models — the Purple® Hybrid and Purple Hybrid® Premier. The transition layer of the Purple® Mattress is 1.8-lb. foam, which is the same density of support cores as in most memory foam mattresses.
The cover in a Purple mattress is a knit blend of polyester, viscose (rayon) and Lycra (spandex). The Purple Mattress comes with a SoftFlex™ cover, while the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier come with a stretchier StretchMax™ Cover.
TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses use a knit cover. Their lower-end models come with a “Cool-to-Touch” cover, while the ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt series have a “SmartClimate” system with an inner cover.
The coils in both the Purple and Tempurpedic hybrid mattresses are made of steel alloys. For both brands, these are pocketed coils, encased in fabric pockets so they can respond independently and provide bounce. This enables them to be conforming and to cancel motion transfer.
Materials in the TEMPUR-Adapt Series vs the Purple® Mattress
TEMPUR-Adapt mattresses have a knit “Cool-to-Touch” cover. In this series, it cannot be removed for cleaning.
The comfort layer of both TEMPUR-Adapt models is Tempur-ES, a softer version of Tempur Foam. The support layer foam is the Original Tempur Foam. The support core of the TEMPUR-Adapt Medium is high-density foam. In the TEMPUR-Adapt Medium Hybrid, the support core consists of pocket coils with foam encasement edge support and a base pad of HD poly foam.
The Purple® Mattress has a 2” No Pressure® Support Grid with a 1.8-lb transition layer and 2.0-lb support core of HD polyurethane foam. Recent upgrades to this model include a SoftFlex™ cover and greatly improved edge support.
Materials in the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Series vs the Purple® Hybrid
All TEMPUR-ProAdapt models are 12” high. They have TEMPUR-Pedic’s SmartClimate Dual Cover System, with an outer cover that can be unzipped, removed, and washed. This series features one of TEMPUR-Pedic’s new Tempur Foams, TEMPUR-APR® (Advanced Pressure Relief), which is in each of the four models. The three foam support models have high-density polyurethane transition and base layers.
The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Soft and Medium models have a TEMPUR-ES comfort layer and a TEMPUR-APR support layer. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Firm has a TEMPUR-APR comfort layer and a TEMPUR Material support layer.
In the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium Hybrid, the comfort layer is TEMPUR-ES and the support layer of pocket coils with HD poly foam edge support and a base pad.
The Purple Hybrid has a 2” No Pressure® Support of the Purple Grid™ comfort layer with edge support. The comfort layer is supported by 7½” pocketed coils for just the right bounce, a foam transition layer, and foam base pad of 2.0-lb polyurethane foam.
Materials in the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Series and the Purple® Hybrid Premier
The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt™ Series has two 13” high models, TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Firm. Each one is described as a lux mattress. Both have transition and base layers of HD polyfoam. The comfort layer is Tempur ES in the Soft model and Original Tempur Foam in the Firm model. The support layer in each mattress is Tempur APR+, an advanced version of APR with a different cell structure. The difference between soft and firm in this series is determined by the material of the top foam layer.
The two Purple® Hybrid Premier models have 7½” pocket coil support and 2-lb. HD polyurethane foam transition layer and base layer. The height of the No Pressure Purple® Grid is customizable, allowing you to choose between a 3” or 4” comfort layer.
Sizes and Pricing

The Purple® Mattress, TEMPUR-Adapt Series, and TEMPUR-ProAdapt Series begin with Twin size, while the Purple® Hybrid, Purple® Hybrid Premier, and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt™ Series begin with Twin XL. The LuxeAdapt Series is not available in Full size.
It’s worth noting that in order to combat the heating issues of memory foam, Tempurpedic has introduced “Breeze” versions of their mattresses which can add yet another $600 to the price, placing it well above the cost of a cool and breathable Purple.
How much does a Purple mattress cost?

Delivery and Packaging
There is a significant difference between the delivery and packaging of Purple and TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses. All of Purple’s mattresses are compressed, rolled, sealed, and shipped directly to your door.
TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses are not compressed and rolled. They are usually purchased in a retail store and delivered by the store for an extra fee. You can order a TEMPUR-Pedic online but be aware that the mattress is shipped full size. White glove delivery is included in the cost of your order.
Trial Period and Return Policy
TEMPUR-Pedic offers a 90-day trial period for mattresses purchased on their website or from one of their flagship stores. Before purchasing from a mattress store, you should carefully check the terms. TEMPUR-Pedic warns, “Offer not valid for purchases made at third-party retail stores.”
To return a Tempurpedic mattress, the customer must sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before filing a claim. Buyers are expected to pay return shipping, which could prove quite costly. The company has a “10-Year Full Replacement Limited Warranty” on the mattress.
Purple offers a hassle-free 100-Night Sleep Trial. If the mattress doesn’t work out for any reason, you can return it for free. Purple will come and pick up your mattress at no charge and donate it to charity. The warranty is for 10 years, and the customer does not have to pay a deductible to file a warranty claim.
Both TEMPUR-Pedic and Purple mattresses are sold online and they are also available at many mattress stores.
The firmness in Purple’s mattress is Universal. With a medium-firm feel, the technology of Purple mattresses provides a combination of support and comfort that accommodates all sleeping positions and a wide range of body types — making it the perfect choice for couples and sleepers who tend to roll over and change positions during the night.
Since memory foam is not as versatile as the Purple Grid™, Tempurpedic mattresses are sold in a variety of firmness levels, ranging from Soft to Firm in each of their Tempur Series. Unfortunately, this can create some complications for the buyer. Tempurpedic mattresses are expensive and buying a new bed is a big investment. By purchasing a Tempurpedic mattress, you become locked in to a very specific feel.
For example, you may enjoy a soft Tempurpedic mattress for side sleeping. But what happens when you roll over onto your stomach during the night? You can wake up with tremendous back pain. If you purchase a firm mattress, you may enjoy sleeping on your back, but rolling onto your side can cause serious discomfort in your hips and shoulders.
What if you share a bed with a partner, but have different firmness preferences? One of you may be happy with a soft Tempurpedic mattress, but your partner could experience aches and pains. If you try to compromise, you can both end up miserable with a mattress that doesn’t feel right.
This is where Purple wins the contest. The No Pressure® Support of the Purple Grid™ can support any sleeping position, providing comfort and support to a range of body types. No matter your personal preference, everyone can get a good night’s sleep with Purple.
Purple mattresses are very breathable, thanks to the open columns in the Purple Grid™ which allow plenty of air to circulate. When you lie on a Purple, the flexing of the grid literally forces air in and out. As the grid flexes, the air moves horizontally, so you sleep nice and cool — all night long.
Breathability is a bit more complex in TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses. Although Tempurpedic memory foam is of high quality, it is still memory foam. This means that you can expect the unpleasant smell off-gassing that comes with new memory foam.
Memory foam also tends to trap heat. You can wake up in the middle of the night feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Tempurpedic tries to solve heat issues by offering expensive “Breeze” versions of their mattress models — though the prices are significantly higher for those wishing to sleep cooler.
Purple mattresses can support all sleeping positions. This is due to the unique conforming properties of the Purple Grid™. Purple mattresses provide support for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and side sleepers, so you and your partner can get a great night’s rest no matter how you choose to sleep.
With Tempurpedic, you have to choose a specific level of mattress firmness, so your sleeping position options are limited. A firm mattress is good for stomach sleeping but it can cause joint pain if you try sleeping on your side. You’ll likely have to stick to a single sleeping position. If you tend to roll over and enjoy multiple sleeping positions when you sleep, Tempurpedic may not be the best choice.
When people shop for a mattress, they often ask, “How long does a mattress last?”
How long does a Tempurpedic mattress typically last?
Even though a TEMPUR-Pedic mattress can last ten years, it can become less comfortable over time. Because a sleeper’s personal preference and physical needs can change, most experts advise purchasing a new mattress every seven years.
How long will the Purple mattress last?
Purple mattresses are very durable and come with a 10-year non-prorated warranty. You can expect your Purple to last 10-20 years.
Purple Mattress vs TEMPUR-Pedic: Which Mattress Comes Out on Top?
When it comes to TEMPUR-Pedic vs Purple, which mattress should you buy? TEMPUR-Pedic is a reputable company and they make high-quality mattresses. However, there are several reasons why Purple comes out on top in this Tempurpedic mattress comparison.
TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses are quite expensive compared to most other mattress brands. The Purple® Mattress is competitively priced while still offering exceptional performance and high-quality materials.
The memory foam in Tempurpedic mattresses can create issues. First, there can be a noticeable odor caused by off-gassing. In contrast, the Purple material does not off-gas. Memory foam is also notorious for absorbing body heat, which can cause sleepers to feel hot and uncomfortable. Tempurpedic has released “Breeze” versions of their mattresses in an attempt to combat the heat issues of memory foam — though this raises the cost of a Tempurpedic even more. In comparison, Purple mattresses sleep cool, thanks to the open grid system of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ comfort layer.
Another major difference is mattress firmness, which affects sleeping position as well as comfort. Since memory foam is not very versatile, Tempurpedic offers mattresses in a variety of firmness levels, ranging from soft to firm. This means that once you choose a mattress firmness, you have essentially committed to a single sleeping position. For example, if you enjoy side sleeping on a soft mattress, you or your partner can experience back pain if one of you is also a stomach sleeper. And if you enjoy a firm mattress for stomach sleeping, you can wake up with sore hips and shoulders if you roll onto your side during the night. Do you really want to invest in an expensive mattress model that can limit how you sleep?
