What Makes a Bed Scandinavian Anyway?

Scandinavian or Nordic design is all about minimalism, functionality, and simple decor pieces. Designers like Alvar Aalto (Finland) and Arne Jacobsen (Denmark) helped popularize the style with their unique furniture designs.

This design aesthetic came to be known as Scandinavian Design after a popular “Design in Scandinavia” exhibition showed at the Brooklyn Museum in 1954. The exhibit featured simple, minimalist furniture — a big shift from the incredibly decorative styles of 1940s decor.

The style’s popularity continues into the modern day — thanks to IKEA, which offers Scandinavian Design at extremely accessible prices.

Scandinavian-style furniture pieces offer a modern feel to your space and feature simple clean lines. Overall, Scandinavian design doesn’t offer much in the way of decorative, ornate details.

Scandinavian beds, in particular, feature simple headboards, sharp, clean edges, and solid wood craftsmanship. With functionality at the forefront of the Scandinavian design aesthetic, these beds aren’t meant to be statement pieces. Instead, they are a minimalist addition that blends in with the other simple furniture pieces in your space.
