How to Beat Depression
With 350 million people of all ages suffering from depression and 1 in 3 people suffering from insomnia, there’s strong correlation. So it could be the most natural treatment for depression may be the right amount of sleep. It’s definitely a good place to start, anyway.
Take the quiz! How Much Sleep Do Actually You Need?
So how much sleep do you need to be happier?
When you begin a new sleep regimen as you figure out how to beat depression naturally…Surprise! A full 8 hours for best results, and at least more than 6.
According to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, a full 8 hours in bed at night helps antidepressants work more effectively. This went against what other studies have found, which actually claim restricting sleep to 4 or 5 hours helped the effectiveness of antidepressants.
“Although we predicted the group with restricted time in bed would have a better response, based on previous sleep deprivation research in depression, we actually found the opposite, said professor J. Todd Arnedt, who led the research. “This is the first study to demonstrate that adequate sleep might accelerate and augment antidepressant treatment response, but more research is necessary.”
Here are some of the highlights:
- 63% of people who spent 8 hours in bed saw improvements in their symptoms while taking antidepressants.
- After only 6 hours of sleep, only 1/3 saw improvements
- Antidepressant response was faster for those who had 8 hours of sleep than those who had 6
So, this study basically reiterates what you already likely know: the simplest advice for anyone wanting to be happier is to get a full 8 hours of sleep!
